LIMINAL in 2019
It struck us recently that it seems like we’re always looking to the future, and rarely focus on the things we have achieved, the things we work so hard to create.
So we thought we’d take a moment to look at the things we’ve done this year.

Australia Council Arts Grant
We started the year off with a big win: we received our first Australia Council Arts Grant! For the first time, we could pay our editorial team. This also allowed us to publish our weekly interviews, establish new streams, and to run the inaugural Liminal Fiction Prize.
SPOTLIGHTS, PLAYLIST & Boundless
Winning this grant meant we could run three special streams this year.
Spotlight
Firstly, Spotlight, curated by Mike Eleven, illuminates the work of incredible Asian-Australian artists and designers.
Playlist
Secondly, Playlist, curated by Non Chalant, is an ongoing archive of Asian-Australian musicians.
Boundless
Our third new stream was Boundless, a space which considers the experience of mixed-race Asian-Australians, curated by Sumarlinah Raden Winoto.

LIMINAL PRIZE
We launched the Liminal Prize for Fiction, a new literary prize for writers of colour, the first of its kind.
DIVERSITY ARTS
In February, we took part in the Diversity Arts Fair Play Symposium, where our editor was quoted in Arts Hub’s ‘9 Electric Quotes on Diversity from Industry Experts’:
‘We recently launched the Liminal Prize for Fiction, which only takes submissions from writers of colour. And of course we have received an interesting amount of white fragility as backlash. But in a country where our biggest literary prize, that has been running for 63 years, has only been won by three writers of colour… I want to see more excellence because I know that it’s there.’
Comic Sans #2
We launched our second issue of Comic Sans at Sticky Institute’s Festival of the Photocopier! Featuring Lazy Willy, Meg O’Shea, Soolagna Majumdar, Hien Pham and dangerlam.
