Where and to whom do we belong? In what language do we dream, what is the taste of comfort?
In this collection, there are many spectres: of people and ideas, of memories of places both real and imagined. The things that haunt us are often unfinished; it’s usually where the past and the present intersect. A ghost is at once historical and contemporary—a haunted space speaks of the past, but it is always a past that is seen and interpreted through the ‘now’.
Yet to be haunted is also to remember, and the works in this collection are testaments to the power of history. They speak of resilience in the face of the White Australia policy, the endurance of the spirit of a city, the romantic draw of supernatural worlds, and the ancestral presence of departed family members.
This series features work by emerging and established South Australian writers: Lur Alghurabi, Patrick Allington, Katherine Tamiko Arguile, Justina Ashman, Brian Castro, Olivia De Zilva, Glenn Diaz, Thu Hoang, Stefanie Hooi, Samuel Lau, Mike Lim, Melati Lum, Tamara Montina, Cherian Philipose, Anisha Pillarisetty, and Christina Soong.
